Local 40 is a democratic organization run by it's members. The union holds elections every five years for the positions of President/Administrator, Financial Secretary Treasurer, Vice-President, Trustees and Executive Board Members. Local 40 holds five membership meetings a year. Local 40 has a full complement of staff including Union Representatives, clerical and administrative support staff as well as specialty staff. Officers Trustees Executive Board Union Representatives Administrative Support Staff Officers President/Administrator The President/Administrator is an Executive Officer of the Union and presides at all regular and special membership meetings and at all meetings of the Executive Board. The President/Administrator represents the interests of all Local 40 members in discussions at Executive Board meetings on matters regarding the administration of the union. The President/Administrator is responsible for co-signing all cheques issued from union funds and all documents required by the local union and the international union for the protection and welfare of the members. He/she is the official representative and chief spokesperson of the union in all collective bargaining. The President/Administrator manages the Local 40 office, assigns all office staff responsibilities, directs the activities of union representatives and organizers, chairs meetings and acts as Local 40's representative to all outside organizations. The President/Administrator is a delegate to the international union convention and a delegate to all other bodies which the local union affiliates. The office of President/Administrator is a full-time salaried position. Jim Pearson is the current President/Administrator, appointed by the Executive Board and ratified by the general membership in June, 2006. Jim was successfully elected as President for a five year term in February, 2008. return to top Financial Secretary Treasurer The Financial Secretary Treasurer is an Executive Officer of the union. He/she is responsible for all financial management of Local 40 and keeps a complete and accurate record of all business transactions of the Union including income, expenditures, assets and liabilities. The Financial Secretary Treasurer co-signs all cheques for disbursements of union funds, compiles monthly reports for submission to the international union as required by the international constitution and is responsible for the collection of and providing receipts for all fines, dues and any other fees due to the union. The Financial Secretary Treasurer is also responsible for and oversees the posting of dues to each member’s account. The Financial Secretary Treasurer represents the interests of all Local 40 members in discussions at executive board meetings on matters regarding financial decisions and policies of the union. The Financial Secretary Treasurer is in charge of all correspondence of the union and is responsible for maintenance of the union membership list. In the absence of the President/Administrator, the Financial Secretary Treasurer and the Vice-President shall jointly direct the activities of the business agents and organizers. The Financial Secretary Treasurer is a delegate to the international union convention and a delegate to all other bodies which the local union affiliates. This office is a full-time salaried position. Shelly Ervin is the current Financial Secretary Treasurer of Local 40, elected to office in February, 2003, and was returned to office for an additional five year term in February, 2008. Vice President The Vice-President aids and assists the office of President/Administrator in the discharge of his/her duties. In the absence of the President/Administrator, the Vice-President shall preside over all meetings and be invested with the same power as though he/she were President/Administrator (at meetings ruled by Robert's Rules of Order). In the absence of the President/Administrator, he/she shall, jointly with the Financial Secretary Treasurer, direct the activities of Union Representatives and organizers. The Vice-President is a delegate to the international union convention and to all other bodies which the local union affiliates. The office of Vice-President is a full-time salaried position. Lorrie Dyer is the current Vice President of the union, elected in February, 2008. Trustees Local 40 elects three trustees every five years. Trustees are responsible for supervising the property of the Local, reviewing the books and verifying financial reports and annual audits. Steve Grant, Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel, Burnaby; Judy Clements, Holiday Inn Broadway in Vancouver; and Emma Jimenez, Four Seasons Hotel, Vancouver are the current Trustees of Local 40, elected in February, 2008. return to top Executive Board The Local 40 Executive Board is made up of 16 members elected every five years, or by appointment if a vacancy becomes available. Members include the President/Administrator, Financial Secretary Treasurer, Vice-President, 12 Regional Executive Board members and one Member-at-Large. The Executive Board is the governing body of the union and meets monthly (except July and December) to discuss administrative and operational issues and participate in decisions regarding administration, policy and financial matters. The Executive Board is also responsible for suggesting ways and means Local 40 can improve its policies and services to members. Current Local 40 Executive Board Members are: 1. Louie Gueverra, Host YVR, Richmond return to top Union Representatives Your UNITE HERE Local 40 Union Representatives, also referred to as Business Reps or Business Agents, are full-time employees in the union office who can help answer any questions you may have about your collective agreement, your union dues or your benefit plans. They are professionally trained in dealing with issues concerning management in the workplace. They also provide technical advice to Stewards and teach new Stewards how to handle complaints and Stage One grievances. Union Representatives also handle complex grievances, keep members up-to-date on grievance status, take members' cases to arbitration and act as coordinators of bargaining teams during contract negotiations. Administrative Support Staff Local 40's administrative support staff are, under direction of the Financial Secretary Treasurer, responsible for ensuring membership and steward phone lists are up-to-date, record information on grievance files, advise members about meeting dates and locations, and ensure that the union officers and reps have the appropriate forms, bulletins and union booklets to perform their duties.
