What if I have to leave the industry for a while or get laid off for more than a month? If you are leaving the industry and you are a member in good standing (your dues are current and paid up-to-date), we recommend you apply for a withdrawal card from Local 40. By taking this action, you can reactivate your union membership at a later date. Please be aware that you are not entitled to a withdrawal card if you continue working. If you will be laid off from a Local 40 property for more than one full month, we recommend you apply for a withdrawal card. Having a withdrawal card means you do not have to pay monthly union dues for each month you are out of the workforce and ensures your membership continues in good standing. Current membership in good standing is a criteria for continued coverage under all health care plans that are administered by A.R.M. Management Ltd. Please make cheques payable to UNITE HERE Local 40. When you return to work you will be required to pay a $19.00 withdrawal card reinstatement fee to the union. Your application for a withdrawal card must be received by Local 40 during the last month for which your dues are paid up. For example, if your last shift is October 15th and your dues are paid for October, make your application for a withdrawal card before November 1st and you won't have to pay November's dues. If you don't apply for a withdrawal card before the beginning of November, you will have to pay November's dues. What if I have filed a grievance and then become suspended or discharged? If you have filed a grievance and subsequently become suspended or discharged, you must keep your membership status current in order to validate the proceedings. You can do so by either paying your monthly union dues personally or applying for a withdrawal card. If your grievance seeks reinstatement on a lengthy suspension or a discharge, and your grievance succeeds, your appropriate union dues will be deducted from your monetary award. Our support staff in Local 40's Burnaby office will be pleased to answer any dues questions you may have. Please contact them for further information at 604-291-8211 or toll-free at 1-800-663-1728. If you have any problems concerning union dues, please feel free to contact the Local 40 Dues Department. |
