UNITE HERE Local 40 Union Dues & Benefits

Monthly Union Dues

Union dues are normally deducted by the employer and forwarded to Local 40 on your behalf. However, it is each member's responsibility to ensure his or her dues are being remitted.

The union Bylaws state that you must pay your monthly union dues to remain a member in good standing and dues are payable on the first day of each month. Any member who is two months in arrears shall become suspended.

Please be advised that union dues are tax deductible and each year you will receive a dues receipt from Local 40 for income tax purposes. Please ensure that your current address is on file with the union so that your receipt can be mailed to you.

How dues are processed:

Each month your employer deducts your union dues and at the end of each month remits these funds to the union office along with a check-off form indicating the number of hours you’ve worked and the appropriate dues that were deducted. It is essential you ensure this information is correct each month.

Local 40 processes this information from the employer and posts your dues into your account as a member of the union.

If you are a first time member of Local 40, an Initiation Fee applies before you qualify as an active union member. Usually this amount is deducted from your paycheck and submitted by your employer, along with your union dues, to the union office. Sometimes the employer neglects to deduct and then submit to the union office the full amount of the Initiation Fee and only submits the union dues, causing a delay in your active membership status. Until your Initiation Fee is paid in full, you will remain in a “Pending State”, delaying active membership status and possibly delaying access to your benefit plans.

If your union dues have not been paid in full for more than two months in a row, your membership in Local 40 will be suspended. In order to re-establish active membership, all owed dues plus a Reinstatement Fee will apply. The same procedure is then followed, requiring the Reinstatement Fee to be paid in full before active membership can be reassigned.

If you take a withdrawal card, a Withdrawal Reinstatement Fee will be due when you return to work to re-establish active membership.

Local 40 Monthly Dues

In July, 2004, at a founding convention in Chicago, members of UNITE and HERE (the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees) voted to merge and create a new organization called UNITE HERE.

At that historic meeting, members of the Hotel, Restaurant, Culinary and Bartenders Union, Local 40 together with thousands of other workplace leaders from across North America, overwhelmingly affirmed their commitment to the new organization and voted to support a new dues structure.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our dues department.
