Religious leaders support hotel workers

All religions believe in justice. Whether Sikh, Christian, Hindu or Jewish, religion is based on the idea of community, and when one part of the community suffers, everyone suffers. This includes injustices in the workplace.

The religious community in Vancouver has recently seen hotel workers throughout the area struggling for a living wage and fair working conditions. And they have stepped up to show their support for the workers.

At an Interfaith Prayer Breakfast that took place on November 6, faith leaders from the Hindu, Sikh and Christian traditions gathered together to hear stories from hotel workers. They heard about the heavy workload of housekeepers, and the pain and injuries that result. They heard about the current struggle to bring the contracts at the Delta Vancouver Airport, Holiday Inn Broadway and the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown up to the same standards as the downtown corporate hotel workers’ contract.

After hearing from the workers, the faith leaders pledged their support and committed to taking action in solidarity with the hotel workers. The religious leaders will continue to monitor the situation of the hotels until they see positive change occur.
