In a membership vote conducted by the Labour Relations Board in Vancouver, counted on October 10, 2007, a decisive majority of UNITE HERE members working for Aramark at GM Place voted in favour of remaining with our union, UNITE HERE Local 40. The vote resulted from raiding activity that took place in the spring and summer by the BC Government Employees Union. “Congratulations to the UNITE HERE members who have stepped forward during this past year of challenges at GM Place and focused on improving working conditions for their Local 40 brothers and sisters,” said Local 40 President/Administrator Jim Pearson. “The workers at GM Place have continued to be strong and have been successfully working together to bring their issues forward to this employer, Aramark Food Services, on a regular basis. We are all proud of their efforts and continue to support and strengthen their resolve in the workplace,” said Pearson. Workers at GM Place are back on the job since late September, after a summer that saw limited events taking place at this entertainment stadium. With the recent opening of the 2007-07 Vancouver Canucks hockey season, UNITE HERE Local 40 continues to support and strengthen the worker committees that are fighting to improve their conditions. Local 40 has been the union representing food service workers at GM Place since it opened in 1996. Aramark, a multi-national corporate employer, currently has the food service contract at this facility. Union members will be negotiating a new contract with Aramark in 2008. |
