The Mixer, November, 2007 Local 40 Secretary Treasurer Shelly Ervin, together with Union President Jim Pearson, recently applied to UNITE HERE with a request to waive the constitutionally mandated union dues increase for Local 40 members in British Columbia. Scheduled to take effect October 1, 2007, Sister Ervin and Brother Pearson wrote to the International Union presidents requesting a waiver of exemption for Local 40 members from the dues increase, citing our current union dues structure contained in our union bylaws already provided sufficient dues to the International Union for our members as allowed under UNITE HERE’s Constitution Article 17 1(f). In reply, John Wilhelm, President/Hospitality Industry and Bruce Raynor, General President, replied in writing: Whereas the Presidents have adopted a standard, to be uniformly applied, that, where an affiliate is in sound fiscal condition, is current in per capita payments, is requiring dues rates above the constitutional minimum, and there are no unusual financial constraints, the Presidents may authorize an affiliate to waive Constitutionally imposed dues increases; therefore, the Presidents authorize Local 40 to waive the Constitutionally mandated October 1, 2007 dues increase. If you have any questions about the process or the exemption, please do not hesitate to contact Shelly Ervin, your Secretary Treasurer. |
