Building a stronger union means building worker power. UNITE HERE! is doing this across Canada and in the US by strengthening our membership in our key industries – hospitality and food service. Last summer, Local 40 members saw this when we achieved contract victories at the Westin, Renaissance, Four Seasons & Hyatt in Vancouver. And again, this past winter brought historic bargaining victories at the Delta Vancouver Airport in Richmond and at the Hilton in Burnaby. This is Hotel Workers RISING! Service Workers RISING! is the same approach – a movement of 100,000 food service workers across North America – and Local 40 has now established a new Food Service Division that will unite Aramark workers at GM Place in Vancouver, Cara & Host workers at the Vancouver International Airport, Compass workers at the Victoria International Airport and workers at cafeterias throughout British Columbia, as well as dining room & kitchen workers at Hastings Racecourse and workers at the Lower Mainland’s many golf & tennis clubs. Local 40 is focusing new energy on representing our food service members from Nanaimo to Prince George. We’re building a movement of cooks, dishwashers, cashiers, servers, bartenders, warehouse workers, drivers and camp workers to demand respect and economic justice for union workers and their families. Our plan is simple: get more members involved, train more leaders for the straight-forward work of enforcing our current rights & benefits and negotiate new & better collective agreements. Over the next year, major negotiations are on the calendar for many Local 40 members: this summer at Compass/Kamloops Senior Centre & at the Kemess Mine, this fall at GM Place and next spring at Host/Vancouver International Airport. To win the gains that our members and their families need and deserve, you have to get involved. Together – you, your co-workers & your Union reps – have to organize your workplace, unite to protect your jobs and rights, and take action together to demand respect & economic justice. Meanwhile, all across North America, Service Workers RISING! is setting the example for Local 40 members. The power of 100,000 members is currently focused on Aramark and demanding that this corporate food giant step up to the plate and be a responsible employer at sports & convention venues, universities & schools, corporate cafeterias and corrections facilities. UNITE HERE! has been succeeding with tough contract negotiations, militant job actions, successful strikes and new organizing drives. This fall we will have the opportunity to do the same at Aramark/GM Place in Vancouver.
