At the most recent round of negotiations at the Hilton, members of the Bargaining Committee reaffirmed their intentions to achieve wage parity with their union brothers and sisters working at the downtown Vancouver corporate hotels. Executive Board & Bargaining Committee member, Steve Grant, who works as the Night Auditor at the hotel, said, “Our members working in all departments at the hotel are looking forward to a fair resolution to our concerns with this round of bargaining. After today’s meeting, I’m somewhat encouraged that at least our employer is listening to us.” Jim Pearson, lead negotiator at the Hilton bargaining, is aware of the enormous amount of union business that takes place at the Hilton, as well as the business that comes from socially progressive organizations in Burnaby and the surrounding area. “Our members recently served a full banquet at the hotel when the United Way of the Lower Mainland held it’s annual Labour Appreciation dinner at the hotel. It’s events like these, as well as union meetings, that could be in jeopardy if we reach an impasse with these talks,” he said. Many members have stepped forward to participate on the Bargaining Committee and are attending the talks. The union will keep the community aware of any further actions it may need to implement as talks progress. |
